my son is 5 and has really bad chicken pox, all over body in mouth and throat and round eyes. have been giving paracetamol, antihistamine and using calamine lotion and virasooth cream. can he get any other medications to help? like anti-virals?

Accepted Answer

: A drug called acyclovir can sometimes reduce the intensity of varicella outbreaks/symptoms. For most cases this is not recommended but if the pattern is as cited it may be an option.

No: Caladryl has Benadryl (diphenhydramine) in it but calamine does not.  Do not use caladryl or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) lotion on your skin because they may sensitize you or make you allergic to benadryl (diphenhydramine).  A nice tip - put calamine lotion in the fridge before using it - it will soothe more if it is cold.

Tibial rash: Many causes. Some are not allergic. Got to see a skin doctor if it persists and he will tell you.

Yes: One is oral and one is topical. There will not be  any interaction.

Hydrocortisone: Hydrocortisone will hasten the healing but calamine may reduce the itching. You may need both.

Nocturnal itching: I am concerned about the possibility of insect bites or infestation(?from chiggers)from playing in the lawn. Observe for any evidence. Your pediatrician can recommend the proper dose of benadryl which is antihistamine and antitpruritic as well as being a mild sedative.
