3-6 months if at all: Many surgeons will avoid surgery for radiculopathy (an irritated nerve in the spine) if there is no pain, the weakness is not worsening, and you are not having any bowel, bladder, or balance problems. Careful exam to make sure weakness not worsening over next few months. Will take a long time to improve. Pt to maximize function. Physiatry eval for management.

is spinal surgery necessary for a disc tear between c7 and t1? has pt alone been found to be successful for this type of injury?

Accepted Answer

Not necessary: Surgery is absolutely not necessary for a disc tear and in fact, the vast majority of patients will do just fine with conservative treatment, whether that's pt or spinal injections or medications or even just simply observation and time.

small right far lateral dsc protrusion at c7- t1 encroaching the neural foramen and possibly impinging c8 nerve root.  will this require surgery

More likely than not: BUT first things first!!!  An epidural injection by a INTERVENTIONAL PAIN EXPERT would be my first step! Ask your PCP (Primary Care Provider) for a referral to a Pain Clinic

For Many: You can return to light duty in about a week. This varies depending on your surgeon and the complexity of your surgery however.

i had a anterior vertebretomy on c5 and 6 and now have a 2mm bulge on c7 causing one of the roots to be trapped should i consider surgery pt didnt help i am 57yo?

Possibly: Surgery is usually the treatment of last resort.  If you can't treat the pain with antinflammory drugs, or PT.  Than I would advise you speak to your physician about the inaffectiveness of PT and/or other treatments that you have tried.  You and your Physician than need to determine if the pro's and con's of surgery are worth it in the long run.

See below: I would think given time and rest, it would heal like most pulled or torn muscles.  Depending on the extent, I guess it's possible you would need a surgical repair.  I would see an orthopedist or sports medicine physician.

Options: Typically, with cervical spondylosis, the treatment algorithm is physical therapy, followed by epidural injections, then, finally surgery, which would include an anterior cervical decompression and fusion. This is a complicated situation because you are young and adjacent level disease could be an issue. Hold off on surgery as long as possible. Don't operate for neck pain, but arm/hand symptoms.

Question not: clear; if you had surgery it is going to hurt for a few weeks but the original pain should have improved.

Accepted Answer

Facet fractures: Stable fractures of the cervical spine often heal in the first 3 months, and this is a reasonable time for immobilization. Once pain subsides, flexion/extension xrays will likely be taken to make sure no instability exists from ligament injury that would necessitate surgery despite bony healing. Posterior fusion surgery can be done safely/quickly in experienced hands with quick recovery.
