In actuality, his fetal hemoglobin will be more protective from sickle cell, and treatments now focus on keeping fetal hemoglobin around.

Basics: If I want to test for cocaine exposure in a newborn i do not rely on the transient time it might be in umbilical cord blood. I will find it if I look and the fetus was exposed at any time after the first trimester.If the fetus was exposed they are better off confiding with the delivering doctor who can help them through the issues involved.

Maybe,maybenot: The idea is there is baby blood in the placenta & it is a good source of iron. Babies don't make much new blood in the first months so their level starts out higher than adults to begin with & normally falls as baby grows. The problem with this move is you can let too much blood go across & babies blood will be too thick & could lead to kidney damage or stroke. I'd avoid it.

Yes,but: I find it is only a benefit if used briefly to blot the area followed by drying.I prefer alcohol swabs several times a day.When the peroxide is left in place it converts to water and makes the area soggy and stinky.

Hard to say: It's possible that there is a little irritation (dry skin, insect bite, moisture from bathing) and then he starts playing with the belly button, so it creates more irritation. You can try some hydrocortisone 1% cream (over-the-counter) and see if it improves. If not, see his doctor.

Varies with location: These are collected at my local hospitals & stored in a cold facility for an extended period by the lab.The OB occasionally requests a pathologist examine the cord & or placenta for signs of breakdown or infection. If no issues have surfaced during the storage period they are destroyed.
