Difficile is only eradicated with adequate hand-washing by health professionals and by family members who visit their loved ones in the hospital.

Patients usually have recent antibiotic exposure to treat infections, weakened immune system, are over the age of 65, colon disease, previous abdominal or gastrointestinal surgery, or previous history of c. Diff.

Diff infections.

Flagyl or Vancomycin: Clostridium difficile colitis is  treated with a 10-14 day course of oral Flagyl or vancomycin.  Unfortunately relapses occur in 25-30% of treated patients requiring re-treatment.  Multiple recurrences are treated witha 6 week vancomycin pulse/taper  some add a probiotic s. Boulardii (flora stor), some give a Rifaximin chaser.  When these fail, fecal transplant  cures 91% of these recalcitrant pts.

No and Yes: Most cases of c. Difficile colitis can be cured with a 14 day course of Metronidazole or vancomycin.  20-25% of people relapse after their treatment and require re-treatment.  After 1 relapse the risk of recurrent relapses increases.  Recurrent relapses can be a serious problem requiring fecal transplant in some patients.  Severe c. Diff does occur-toxic megacolon needing colectomy in some.
