good day.

i woke up with a burst vein in my eye, which left a bloody stain on the white of my eye.
how long does it generally take to clear up and is there anything i can do to speed up the process?

Topicals: Several astringent eye drops are available to,help decrease the red (Visine and others). It should clear on its own within a week. If this reoccurs, be sure to tell your doctor to make sure this does not represent a medical issue which would require further treatment.

my 6 day old baby has a burst vein in her eye white. should i be concerned?

Probably not: I suspect your baby sustained a subconjunctival hemorrhage, rather common in newborns born after a prolonged second stage of labor.  Spontaneous resolution is expected within 2 weeks.

Conjunctival bleed : You probably have a subconjunctival haemorrage due to excessive rubbing etc. It is normally self-limiting and should subside over a week or two. The headache should clear, but if it persists for more than 3 days or get worse, go see your GP please.

If it looks: like red blood in the white of your eye it is a broken blood vessel, usually a capillary, called a subconjunctival hemorrhage. If painful- get examined.

Depends where. : If a blood vessel bursts on the white part of your eye, that is the equivalent of a bruise and nothing to worry about. If you have a bleed in your eye , symptoms can range from seeing smoky floaters to vision loss.

Depends: If your eye otherwise feels relatively normal but looks terribly "tomato ketchup" red. It probably is just a bruise (subconjunctival hemorrhage). If mild to moderate discomfort with tearing and discharge and some blurring to vision, then conjunctivitis likely. Often viral mediated, the latter usually is in the setting of a cold or flu like symptoms.

Looks dramatic: This is most likely a subconj haemorrhage, does always look dramatic but honestly all it is, is a burst blood vessel. :) I am here

Hemorrage: A subconjunctival hemorrhage from a burst capillary in the white of your eye is likely.  These have no pain or visual disturbance and aren't serious. They resolve on their own in a week. See your MD or an ophthalmologist if pain, visual symptoms, other bleeding issues occur or to confirm dx. Abstain from aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen until resolution of the hemorrh

Red eyes: Yes the spot can be a burst vein from rubbing your eyes, now why do you let yourself suffer like this, why don't you see an allergist?

Get help: Go to the emergency room to have this examined.  There could be a number of reasons for a burst "eye vein."  if you are interested in stopping meth, go to narcotics anonymous meetings.  Any local paper will list meeting times.
