could u please explain the complications of burr hole evacuation... whether there is any relation with neck stability in children..?

Accepted Answer

Unrelated: A burr hole is a hole drilled through the bone of the skull.  This will allow the neurosurgeon to insert needles or catheters or fiber optic instruments in order to take out or evacuate something abnormal.  The hole left will be able to be felt even when all else has healed.  There is no association that i know of with neck stability problems.

Burr hole surgery: Bur hole surgery just refers to the bone opening in the skull to perform the surgery. If you have more details on the surgery i will see what additional help i can add.

Check further: It should not. Check to see if it is inflamed or infected.

is it safe to be traveling after a burr hole and craniotomy?

Accepted Answer

Depends: If everything is healed up and there have been no neurological sequelae, it should be fine. If the neurological status has returned to normal and there are no problems with wound healing and there are no problems with seizures, it is not uncommon for people to travel. Obviously, they should travel with friends/family who are available to help.Probably shouldn't drive until released by neurosurgeon.

Not necessarily: Hopefully this has been decided  by your parents before it is necessary . That is what a will is for. Parents usually choose the child who they feel should be in charge and that may or may not be the oldest. Being firstborn doesn't rest that responsibility on one just by virtue of birth order...Unless you are an only child.

Subdural hematoma: I assume you have the bur hole as the subdural hematoma was treated?  If your follow up CT scan was negative for hematoma then you are cleared. If there is still a hematoma causing pressure on the brain then you need to speak to the neurosurgeon that did the procedure about further treatment.

Yes: This will be arranged at the time of organ donation.

It is possible: It is possible to have recurrence of the subdural hematoma , the rate from 3.7 to 30% after surgery.

what are the different routes taken in inserting a vp shunt? does the tip of catheter go in through the "u" scar or at another entrance (burr hole)?

Accepted Answer

Depends: The largest scar, such as u-shape one is where the surgeon inserts the shunt valve under the scalp.  If the valve is designed to accept the ventricle tube (reaching into the water chamber) at the bottom side of it, the same incision has everything under it.  If the valve has in-line shape, the ventricle tube might travel to different site over the skull then enter brain through a burr hole.
