Bed Bugs: Bedbugs can live anywhere in the home. They can live in cracks in furniture or in any type of textile, including upholstered furniture. They are most common in beds, including the mattress, box springs, and bed frames.
Bedbugs are most active at night. They may bite any exposed areas of skin while an individual is sleeping. Common locations for bedbug bites are the face, neck, hands, legs and arms.

Bed bug bites: Yes - it depends on where the little monsters have set up shop so to speak.   Before you travel next time , go to a site called bed bug registry.  This site lists hotels that have reported incidents of bed bugs.  Very handy. I travel a lot in the summer and use it extensively. (i assumed the bites were the result of travel ).

We can't: Diagnose without seeing it.  Could be from. A bite, rash, fungus and many others.  See podiatrist or dematologist.

No internal bleed: Sometimes superficial bleed where you scratch but that does not swell. The bug bite starts an inflation reaction and that will cause swelling that is short live dad you found.

It could be : try leg elevation, cool ice water and topical hydrocortisone three times a day, add antihistamine as well if not improving see doctor

Control the itching: The body reacts to bites as an immune response. This reaction causes swelling.   Controlling the itching will also help.  Scratching makes them worse.  One home remedy is to apply vinegar to the bites.  This actually neutralizes the toxins causing the reaction.  Rest the legs.  Keep them elevated above heart level. Hose with  at least 20 mm Hg compression up to the knee will also help.

It's time.: Three weeks seems a bit too long to still have anything more than some minor residual pain. Apparently, the tenderness is increasing, which could be a problem. I suggest you have his foot evaluated by a specialist just to play safe.

See doctor: This may be from a spider bite which often gets infected. Need to contact doctor to find out if you may have a different condition or need treatment with an antibiotic.  On rare occasions, the lesion needs be drained and the diseased tissue surgically removed.  Don't wait.
