Probably not: It's probably associated with the knee surgery. Gravity simply allows the blood flow down to the ground and causes the bruising around your ankle. However, if you are having swelling in your calf or thigh with intense pain, you should have a doppler ultrasound to check it.

: In the absence of trauma, petechiae or purpura around the ankles can be caused by certain infections,certain street drugs, certain ,medications or vitamin deficiency causing increased capillary fragility. You're making a mistake by not getting this checked out by a physician or at a health clinic.

Joint stability: Range of motion studies and stability exam can help determine what stage your sprain is. All ankle sprains that have bruising and swelling should be evaluated for ligament tears and a fracture to avoid long term instability.

Many things: Depending on if she had any previous ankle sprains in the past gives clues as to what it may be.  With old ankle injuries, she could have ankle swelling or ankle instability.  If she has no trauma at all or previous ankle injuries then she could have some sort of tumor.  The tumor diagnosis is rare, but a possibility.  I would get an evaluation by an orthopedic specialist.

Not necessarily: You still could of sprained it....example: sometimes when I perform surgery patients get absolutely no swelling or pain, yet, I know I cut into their tissue.....

Post skin Trauma: This sure sounds normal and expected. I do not know what question you are asking given the way your question is written, but any skin trauma, including swelling, can lead to bruising.
