Many possibilities: There are many types and causes of skin rashes.  Several types of inflammatory conditions of the skin, allergic reactions, and sometimes bacterial, viral or fungal infections can cause rashes on the skin. Insect bites can also be the cause of a rash on the skin.  Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.

Need too see it: Skin lessions are best diagnosed by seeing them.  Location, distribution and color are important.  You need to see a family medicine doctor or a dermatologist.

Lupus rash?: It could be a rash associated with your Systemic Lupus. The cutaneous manifestations of SLE include malar erythema, photo-sensitivity, oral ulcers, discoid plaques, bullae, purpura, calcinosis cutis, and alopecia. The butterfly rash (malar erythema) is the most common expression of SLE. See the dermatologist to be officially examined and properly diagnosed for the best treatment. Good luck, get well

Brown spots?: There are many causes of hyperpigmentation. For example, Mongolian spots are common and nothing to worry about.  Cafe au lait spots may need to be followed. Ask you pediatrician - since they can actually see the "brown spots" you are referring to they are in the best position to give them a name and let you know the significance.  Internet "guessing" is likely only going to cause undue anxiety.

Ask your doctor: Light brown discoloration of the skin is very common. These may be "cafe au lait" birthmarks. These are usually normal, but depending on the size, number and distribution of the spots, your doctor may wish to do more testing. Multiple spots can sometimes be associated with an inherited condition called "neurofibromatosis". See your baby's doctor for more information.

Dermatologist: A dermatologist is best qualified to evaluate the eruption. I'm not aware of henoch-schonlein purpura, which is a vasculitis ,lasting that long or causing a generalized eruption. In my experience it involves the lower legs and intestinal tract. I would start the evaluation by seeing the dermatologist.

Usually not: There is a condition called neurofibromatosis associated with cafe au lait spots.  These spots are large, more than 1 cm in diameter, flat, painless, numbering more than 5 on the body.  Patients can develop blockages of the kidney arteries.  This causes severe hypertension.  If you have kidney failure you can develop nodularis prurigo, severe itchy lumps that darken after time.

Genetics referral: You should ask your pediatrician for a referral to a specialist for kids with chromosome abnormalities. I'm sure your pediatrician was planning to do this already at your next visit, but if it is worrying you a lot, call the clinic and see if you can't be referred sooner.

Probably benign: As we age we often develop itchy, scaly, brown spots in areas of friction and past sun exposure. If we scratch them, the brown can come off and the spots may bleed. If the spots are round/oval, uniform in color and thickness, they may be simple seborrheic keratoses, benign lesions that your doc can remove with freezing. If irregular shape/color, see doc soon for thorough evaluation.

Café  au lait spot?: Café au lait is french for "coffee with milk" and refers to their light-brown color. I can't be sure what you have--just a guess. Having multiple--6 or more of greater than 5mm before puberty or greather than 15mm after puberty, is a one of diagnostic features of neurofibromatosis-1. These can also be associated with many other medical conditions. Fungal rashes can appear same, but often with "many spots." consult doc. Good luck.
