Many : Many sore throats will last 7-10 days.  Viral infections will resolve on their own.  Bacterial infections may need an antibiotic00strep throat needs an antibiotic or there may be risk of complications down the road (kidney, heart).  Given your smoking history, i would not wait much longer than that before getting a full  evaluation.  You are at an increased risk of oral/throat/larynx cancer.

What to do:: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician ; get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.  Gargle several times a day.

Acid reflux: start by taking  famotidine 20 mg   OTC meds---twice a a day    avoid alcohol/and food 2-3 hours before going to bed.. Add omeprazole 20 mg OTC  meds if symptoms persists-----if that does not help follow up with your pvt doctor

Probably ok: Probably from the sore throat. This is probably more common that we think it is since most people don't cough this stuff out. As long as your breathing is ok and it does not recur then i wouldn't worry.

Sick after s move: Often when  one moves to a new place, there are new viruses that you do not have immunity to. Big you feel it is not an ordinary cold see your new doctor to be on the safe side.  You never know when pneumonia could be just starting.

May be a virus - but: For significantly sore throat w/ swollen tonsils/lymph nodes – see physician &amp; get a strep throat test &amp; culture. Antibiotics are imperative for strep throat.  Try saltwater gargles. Mix tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water – gargle w/ this several times/day. You can gargle w/ Aloe Vera juice a couple of times per day. A mix of chamomile tea w/ honey &amp; a small amt of lemon juice helps.

See your doctor: It is common to develop a bacterial infection like pneumonia after a viral respiratory tract infection. (I.e. A cold)  This usually occurs shortly after the viral illness begins to improve and requires antibiotics. Symptoms vary but include fever, chills, chest pain, productive cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, tiredness, loss of appetite, etc... You need to have a doctor examine you.

?infection: The worst case possibility is a throat infection , in which case you need to see your PCP for antibiotic treatment.  Other possibilities could be sinus drainage and sinusitis.  See your PCP.
