prescribed steroid & antibiotic for asthma and/or bronchitis. took antibiotic by mistake, i wanted steroid first. not helping. do i need to finish it?

Accepted Answer

No: Antibiotic is not usually indicated for asthma. In the case of asthma exacerbation , oral steroid is often needed. I note that you have not been on any asthma controller drug such as inhaled steroid nor does your record show having a rescue inhaler for asthma. I think you should consult an allergist to get your asthma better managed.

Bronchitis: You are absolutely correct. This is 95-98% viral or due to chemical exposures. Do not know how to diagnose this by CXR, but it sounds as if you might benefit from obtaining a second opinion. Do not take antibiotics unless there is a proven pathogen for which it is indicated. Good luck.

Costochrondritis: The asthma and violent coughing may lead to chest cage pain with sprain on  the muscles and the joints on the ribs. The most important step is controlling your asthma . May also try NSAIDs (unless you are "allergic to them") and heating pad.   See doctor if you still have breathing problem . A nasal steroid may help reduce the sneezing. Consider an allergy consult

Cough/ fever: Would consider testing for coronavirus.  But would also consider may need more prolonged therapy with nebulizer treatments and antibiotics 9 that covers atypicals, Discuss use of  N acetyl cysteine and magnesium as well as montelukast   Follow up with MD.

Do not take more: If you are not allergic to the antibiotic an inadvertant dose probably will not hurt.  It jut makes it more likely you may develop a resistace in the future.

Go back to Dr.: It may be possible that your bronchitis is due to a virus which would make the antibiotics useless. Viral infections usually resolve on their own after 1-2 weeks if you are generally healthy. It may also be possible that the antibiotics you were given were not effective against the bacteria. Either way you should go back and see your dr.

Bronchial hyperreact: Do you have asthma? Sometimes after a viral bronchitis we can have bronchial hyperactivity that is a kind of temporary asthma and can present with cough, shortness of breath and wheezing. Both can explain recurrence of the bronchitis symptoms.

None: Despite the fact that antibiotics are frequently used for bronchitis, it's viral more often than not.   That means antibiotics don't work, but the illness can get better over time.

is it safe to take clindamycin antibiotic for bronchitis or cold?

Accepted Answer

Not recommended: Colds are almost always caused by viruses.  They are self limited and do not respond to antibacterial antibiotics which should never be used.  Bronchitis is likewise usually a viral infection and should not be treated with antibiotics unless severe or prolonged. If bronchitis needed antibiotic treatment Clindamycin would not be a good choice. Ceftin, (cefuroxime) vantin, zithromax or Augmentin would be better.

Yes: Get to see a lung specialist, could be asthma or asthmatic bronchitis or else.
