Nonweightbearing: When I have a patient that has to much swelling in the cam boot. I ask them to go nonweightbearing for a week. I use the rice protocol (rest, ice, compression (nonwweightbearing in splint), and elevation). I incorporate nsaids  with Ibuprofen 800mg bid as well. If it still persists an xray or ultrasound might be necessary.

Goes down with time: Ankle fracytures that are treated non operatively in a cast may have swelling following cast removal with activity for some time. It takes on average a total of 9 months for swelling and pain to either go away or if some swelling remains after 9 months it may persist. Therapy and activity will help reduce swelling with time. Check with your physician.

Yes if helpful: If an ankle support such as a brace, sleeve or ace-wrap helps reduce swelling, then yes, you can use it. If the swelling is due to an injury, then it could be very helpful. If the swelling is due to other reasons like leg swelling that tracks down to the ankle, then I think a brace will be less helpful. Do not overtighten the wrap, as this could worsen the swelling below the ankle.
