If your in the: Splint how did the fracture get bigger? 
If the splint isn't working you might want to use crutches.....

Quit Sloughing off.: Skin sloughing, particularly after a period of immobilization and departure from one's daily bathing routine, is almost a given when the immobilization and swelling end. Layers of dead skin cells that are normally sloughed during one's daily routine have piled up and are revealed as these skin "sheets". One can only imagine how much skin is shedded daily by your body daily.

A "tough Break": No PUN intended ..this is a "tough fracture" The bone should heal in 5-8 weeks after infection controlled you will need Physical Therapy!!  You use the great toe to "shove off" when you walk/run!  A sports medicine/podiatrist plus Physical Therapy are the "answer"

Bruising & swelling: Usually with a break, there is bleeding from the bone which leads to swelling and bruising to the toe and surrounding area.  This is not always the case, but when i see this, i always take an x-ray to see.  There is some degree of pain when the toe is moved at the site of the injury.

Your choice: If you want to deal with an obviously deformed toe that will be evident to strangers you can skip the treatment. Over time the body could heal. However, it could settle into a form of non-union where the parts never quite mend &amp; remains painful for the foreseeable future. If you are uncomfortable with the 1st doc, get a second opinion.

Broken toe: After the ice treament, buddy wrap your big toe to the next toe and see your doctor or podiatrist for verification and further treatment.

Typically 6-8 weeks: Fractures usually take 6-8 weeks to heal.  Your recovery may be dependent on when it was treated, if you had surgery and your compliance with your doctor's instructions :-)  talk to your trainer and/or doctor.

Can you walk?: Usually, if you can walk on it its not broken...Is there "black and blue" another clue that there may be a fracture, If any above applies see your doctor and an X ray is indicated.!

Not yet: If it isn't out of place, and you are able to walk around with less and less pain, it's ok to give it some time.  Usually we give anti-inflammatory medication, tape it to the toe next to it to give support. Otherwise there is not much needed. If it gets worse or doesn't improve within 2 weeks, go ahead and get it checked out.
