Probably not: Most exposure to this chemical occurs in swimming pools which always emit a little chlorine.  The effect is to irritate and redden the eyes but will not cause permanent change.  So lifeguards, who do this daily will not have an effect on eyesight.  If you get a serious high exposure from for instance an industrial source, your lungs will more likely suffer than your eyes.

Maybe: a toxic gas can cause inflammation of the surface of the eye which can cause blurred vision.  It should be reversible though.

Yes: Typically happens upon exposure to chlorinated bleach fumes. The reaction in the lungs can range from mild to severe requiring life support. More likely to happen in asthmatics. Best is to avoid using chlorinated products, or use in well ventilated areas, preferably wear a mask.

Emergency care!: You should get medical care as quickly as possible at an emergency room. No antidote exists for chlorine exposure &amp; treatment consists of removing the chlorine from the body as soon possible &amp; supportive medical care such as inhaled breathing treatments for wheezing in a hospital setting.

Swimming?: Swimming in chlorine should pose no problem. Breathing it is likely to be problematic. Don't forget to keep your mouth closed!

Asthma: You should have a spirometry test with an allergist or pulmonologist to see what proper inhalers you need, the albuterol prior to exercise may not be enough.

Try it: Some people do complain of chlorine irritating their lungs.  There was a study finding that people swimming in chlorinated water may actually develop asthma from the exposure.  Since the reaction is variable among people , try swimming in the pool and see if it affects you.

i went into chlorine water yesterday and accidentally swallowed some of it. this morning i woke up coughing, and difficulty breathing and chest tightness. could it have trigged asthma?? should i worry? how long does it stay in the system for?

: Many people swallow some chlorine while swimming and have little after effects. Asthma is not one of them, drink lots of water, and contact PCP if symptoms continue after a few days.
