i have a newborn who is 4 weeks old today. he has what seems like diarrhea straight after every feed. i am breastfeeding and also give a bottle once in a while as a top up. should i be concerned that his pooh is running and he poohs after every feed?

Common: The 1 mo breast fed kid may go a little at runny smear each meal every feed or one bulky stool every 7 days.As long as the kid is active/feeds well/is filling out I don't consider it abnormal. If the volume of these frequent stools is large and or the kid seems lethargic he should be seen.

Keep breastfeeding: Breast milk has antibodies that help reduce viral diarrhea length. There is no medication for diarrhea at this age. Keep buttocks covered in vaseline. However, exclusively breastfed infants will often have squirty mustard looking stools with chunks - often called diarrhea by those used to harder firm stools of formula fed stools. If this persists, make appt with MD to check weight and check health

Continue feeding her: One of the great advantages of breast feeding is that you are not just transferring nutritional components to your offspring but also passively antibodies that your mature immune system is generating against diseases. Your breast milk is sterile unless you have a mastitis in which case you should pump and discard the milk.

It : It is actually normal for a newborn to have liquid stools with every feed (up to 10 a day!).  As long as she is eating well, growing well, and having at least 6 wet (urine) diapers a day, you are in good shape.  Just watch out for diaper rash from frequent bowel movements.  If your child starts acting ill, develops a fever, if you notice blood in her stool or if she stops eating well, call her doctor right away.

Supportive Care: Best treatment for diarrhea, breastfeeding or not, is supportive care. Clear liquids- broth, pedialyte, sport drinks: soft foods- toast, crackers, mashed banana, applesauce are helpful. No need to stop breastfeeding, your baby will get  protective immunity. Don't forget good handwashing with breastfeeding+ going to bathroom. Call your dr if you have blood in stool, unable to pee, or vomiting.

Diarrhea: You probably got antibiotics during and after your c section.  Because you've had the diarrhea for 3 weeks, it could be related to that.  I would actually see your OB doc to confirm what the cause might be.  In the meantime hydrate well, increase your fiber intake.

Diarrhea/breastfeed: Women who are breast-feeding should avoid drugs that contain bismuth, such as pepto-bismol. Imodium (loperamide) is probably safe. for mild upset stomach and diarrhea, the best approach is to keep drinking water and eat simple easy-to-digest foods such as the brat diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). See a doctor if you are vomiting, having bloody diarrhea, fever or chills.
