Still contractions: Braxton-hicks although normal @ 28 weeks are still contractions. If they are recurrent (> 4/hour), cause pelvic pressure or persistent pain, or increased mucousy vaginal discharge, get checked by your ob. Try to limit any activities that cause these contractions (intercourse, exercise, lifting, etc) & call your OB if any of these signs of preterm labor persist or worsen. Take care.

Maybe: Braxton hicks contractions are false labor pains.  Most people find them to be a painless tightening over the whole uterus.  Real contractions are uncomfortable to painful, are usually low across the abdomen, can be associated with spotting or increase in vaginal discharge.  Because you are 31 weeks it is very important to distinguish between the two.  I would recommend you call your doctor.

Good Question: They can start as early as 24 weeks but usually start around 28/32 weeks. You will feel light cramping in your abdomen which will come and go in waves which are not repetative! if you are pre-term and they become regular  2/10 minutes apart go to your OB delivery center and call your dr!

Contractions: These are uterine cramps that are most similar to your period cramps. They are spasms of the uterus that are not rhythmic and dont cause cervical dilation. They start most often after 28-30 weeks but become common around 35 -37 weeks

Not unusual: You should go to the hospital for evaluation if you have 6 or more contractions in one hour, even if they are not painful.

Pregnancy: The difference is that braxton hicks are ineffective and the cervix does not change or dilate.  Real contractions cause the water to break and the cervix to begin changing in preparation of delivery.
