Field of study: Immunology is the field of study of the immune system.  This field is generally studied by allergists for the allergic aspects  (IgE antibody) and people with immune system problems who have recurrent or severe infections (IgA, IgG, IgM).  Rheumatologists study the immune system in regard to autoimmune (against self) diseases.  The immune system protects us from infections but sometimes goes awry!

See below: Tumors are made of cells that have gone bad and started to grow and replicate regardless of the cells around them.  Each tumor as it gets more and more abhorrent expresses a variety of proteins.  These proteins can be detected with antibodies and quantitated.  It is complex.

It protects you from certain kind of infection, helps eliminate used up red blood cell, acting like the biggest lymph node in your body.  However, it is not considered a vital organ and you can be healthy without it.  Some people lose their spleens in auto accident, some needed splenectomy when it is dysfunctional.

AKA Allergies: Immunologic hypersenstivity reactions are any reaction that occurs due to an overreaction or inappropriate reaction by your immune system.  The most common example is allergies.  Other examples include contact dermatitis, chronic hives, large local reactions to insect bites.  There are some types of hypersensitivty that do not involve allergy type reactions, but they are rare.

Little!: You have essentially two specialities that cover the fields.  I trained in a division of clinical immunology and rheuamtology. Most of the non-structural diseases i treat involve the immune system.  Allergist/immunologists will overlap, but the major focus is allergy and asthma than rheumatic issues.

Several!: First, as a rheumatologist, i trained in two medical schools in programs called "clinical immunology and rheumatology." rheumatologists deal with autoimmune diseases.  But they usually do not deal with allergies, either food or inhaled. They do not skin test.  That being said, most allergist are also well trained in immunology, and their is some overlap in treating patients with immune diseases.

Too many to list: Progress in immunology has contributed to improvements in health through:  improved diagnostics, therapeutic antibodies, immune treatment of tumors, auto-immune disease diagnosis and treatment, organ transplantation, elucidation of susceptibility to infections and tumors, prevention of hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn, blood transfusions, and a whole lot more.
