Benign Prostate: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) results from an increase in the number of cells (building blocks) in the prostate.  Genes can play a role, which in turn result in an increase in the secreting and scaffolding cells of the prostate gland. Low blood flow and inflammation might as well.  Testosterone can increase this, and some treatments target this cause.  BPH doesn't always cause urinary issues.

Blocking DHT: Two medications (avodart (dutasteride) and proscar) block an enzyme called 5 Alpha reductase.  These medications block the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone which is more potent.  These medication lead to an approximate 20% reduction in prostate size as well as stop further prostate growth.  You physician cna hlep determine if one of these medications is appropriate for you.

No: None that have been scientifically proven
most of the herbs are marketed with anecdotal evidence, at best
even saw palmetto, which is commonly used for BPH was shown in a very large randomized, placebo-controlled study to be no better than placebo 
(but remember that placebo works ~30% in most studies).

See below: Some of the symptoms are frequency, hesitancy, ie unable to easily start passing urine, urgency, ie immediate urge to pass urine, nocturia ie having to go at night, and weak stream.

Depends: Usually BPH is treated with medications first.  These are alpha-blockers like flomax, or 5-aris like avodart (dutasteride).  If unsuccessful, then a procedure might be indicated (greenlight, turp, holep).  If very large, then suprapubic prostatectomy might be indicated.  See a urologist.

Possible by report: But very uncommon. Prostatitis, bladder neck obstruction, posterior urethral valves & urethral strictuire need to be ruled out first.
