R U in Hospital?: A bowel obstruction is a very serious problem that requires hospital management and, often, surgical treatment.  Obstruction of the intestine causes an inability to take-in any nutrition by mouth, leading to dehydration and eventual vomiting, bloating, cramping pain, and an inability to move one's bowels.  If it does not resolve, it inevitably leads to bowel perforation.

See your Dr: If you are developing the same symptoms as before the surgery you should see your surgeon or ER doctor as soon as possible.  It's unlikely you have another bowel obstruction and more likely your bowels have not "woken up" completely yet, but to be sure you should have some x-rays at the very least.

Large or Small?: Treatment of a bowel obstruction is dependent on it's cause.  Small bowel obstructions are almost always due to scar tissue from prior surgery and may resolve without surgery.  Large bowel obstructions are often due to cancers, twisting of the colon, or inflammatory conditions such as diverticulitis. Urgent diagnosis is necessary with possible surgery, depending on the degree of obstruction.

You mean a "DNR"?: It is unfortunate and sad when a loved one gets sick to the point where further treatment will just cause more pain without helping. At that point we try to make them as comfortable as possible. A dnr means "do not resuscitate", meaning if he has a heart attack or starts dying, he won't be shocked or have compressions started. He also won't be intubated and put on a ventilator.

Intestinal obstructi: You can pass gas in an incomplete bowel obstruction but not with a complete one. Diagnosis is made by the patient's history of characteristic symptoms, presence of a distended abdomen, and either a plain abdominal xray, a ct scan, an ultrasound, or with an air or barium enema performed through the rectum.

Depends on details: A patient with an obstruction needs to work with her primary care doctor and gastroenterologist to see how to eat, drink, and poop. For example, if a person has a complete obstruction, and takes a laxative... where would the poop go? If she is completely blocked... the strongest laxative in the world will just give her the strongest cramps... but where would the poop go? Each person is different!

Combination: Bowel obstruction is diagnosed using a combination of patient history, physical exam, and scans (x-rays, ct, etc.).  Sometimes the physical exam findings are so obvious that scans are not required. Some partial bowel obstructions can be very difficult to diagnose and may elude doctors and patients for months.
