More fiber: Regular, daily bowel movements are important to maintain a healthy gut. Drink plenty of fluids and consume plenty of fiber.

Yes next step: drink plenty of fluids , take mid laxatives or stool softeners and call your surgeon .

Accepted Answer

Depending on: your age and duration of symptoms, this can be a worrisome sign.  Unfortunately, a change in stool caliber can be a sign of stricture/scarring in the gut and even tumor (for at risk individuals).  It could also be benign as in cases of constipation predominant IBS or transient infection with swelling of the gut wall.  If ongoing, discuss this with a physician.

Constipated?: Colonics &amp; purges are popular but should be avoided &amp; can not be recommended (see earlier healthtap answers). Use of irritant laxatives are safe for the short-term only. Fiber supplements, stool softeners, &amp; lavage agents like MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) are safe. Rx drugs are available based on work-up of your cause of constipation. However, patients define "constipation" differently than doctors--what's your issue?

Not normal...: The normal range of bm frequency is from 3 stools bms per day to 1 bm every 3 days.  Your frequency falls outside the range of normal.  The longer the stool sits in the colon is associated with greater risk of colon cancer.  I suggest you eat more fiber, get more active, drink more water or use a gentle laxative to have more frequent bms.  You may want to see a gastroenterologist. Good luck!

Rectal bleeding: Rectal bleeding associated with large hard stools is usually due to hemorrhoids or sometimes anal fissures. Have your physician do a rectal exam to get more information. In the mean time start using a stool softener.

Your rectum: isn't designed to remain pristine after having a bowel movement. Using enemas like Fleets enemas on a regular basis can be dangerous for several reasons, including electrolyte changes, and trauma.  Other patients may have discovered safer methods of cleaning their rectums that I don't know of, so I'd ask your doctor for more information.

See below: it seems that you are losing the sensation of the nerves that causes the function of those sphincters.  with shooting pains down the leg is important you have an MRI of the lower spine with contrast to determine if there is anything pressing on those nerves

Fissure in ano: It sounds as if you may have an anal fissure.  This can be incredibly painful and could also be infected.  You should apply warm compresses or sit in hot water 4-6 times a day, dry off thoroughly and apply a soothing ointment after each soak.  Though you can take Tylenol, (acetaminophen) you will most likely need to see a doctor to get more help for the muscle spasm that is causing the severe pain.

Hemorrhoid/fissure: As the stool passes through the rectum and the anus, it can irritate internal hemorrhoids if they are present, or create a 'cut' in the lining of the anus, called a fissure.  Both can bleed, and be precipitated by passage of a large hard stool.
