Sciatica: There are multiple potential causes, among the more common is a sciatica, which is pain from an irritated nerve in the back.  I would not hesitate to be seen and treated for it.

i have knee pain that cracks at times. could this be bone cancer?

Very unlikely: You're not at a typical age for bone cancer. The findings most likely soft tissue in nature. You may want to see your doctor and get an x-ray to see if you have early degenerative change.

how can i tell if my knee pain is the result of bone on bone or if it is just tendinitis? i have the clicking sensation when i bend my knee.

Imaging studies: You seem young for "bone on bone" disease (AKA advanced arthritis). Xrays would be helpful as an initial screening imaging study to check for arthritis of your knee. If it is tendinitis, the majority of the time it is patellar tendinitis and is usually physical therapy responsive (with or without additional help with NSAIDs which are medications like ibuprofen, naprosyn).

Not cancer: In my 25 years of being a rheumatologist… I have yet to see knee pain present has bone cancer. An x-ray would completely rule that out but it is extremely rare. Pain when exercising suggests a number of possibilities. There could be a problem within the joint. Is there any history of trauma? There could be tendinitis. The first thing to do is rest, anti-inflammatories if there is no contraindication such as stomach ulcers or kidney failure, time, heat.If it continues to cause problems, suggest seeing your doctor.

See ortho: Can be cartilage problem. Can be tendinitis. Needs to be thoroughly evaluated before you play anymore.
