How did you find out: That someone has a &quot;blue eardrum&quot;? If a physician told you, you should ask that physician what the diagnosis is. The 1st thing that comes to mind is blood behind the eardrum. If that&#x27;s the case this needs to be evaluated immediately. If not, has someone been using ear drops? Blue shampoo? Blue markers, food dye or nystatin drops? Lots of questions, and not too many answers here. See/ask MD ASAP!

: Me too, I have never seen a blue eardrum (tympanic membrane) either. Yes, you should take oral antibiotic and ear drop then have it reexamined in a month.

Sometimes: Sometimes a perforated tympanic membranes heals without problems. In some situations you may need to see an Ear/Nose/Throat Specialist (otolaryngologist) for repair.

Scratched eardrum?: How do you know you have a scratched ear drum? You should see an ear nose and throat specialist to check the condition of your ear drum and prescribe any appropriate treatment. In the mean time, keep your ears dry.

Drum hole: If you hold nose and try to pop ear, you will hear air rush out or squeek out.  Its hard to tell otherwise without an exam.  Recommend see ent.

Yes.: Popping can come from a variety of sources - a small bubble bursting, the eustachian tube moving, or debris / or a hair moving in the canal. None of these would be much affected by a hole in the eardrum.

Ruptured eardrum: It is fine to have a cotton ball in your ear with a perforation.  It will do no harm.  Some people like to use this when they shower to avoid water in the ear.  Feel better.

Ear drum hole: Yes it is possible.  Antibiotic drops or by mouth may cure infection and perforations.  Also, many perforations will heal without any treatment.  Sometimes a small hole will be treated with medication to inflame the edges.  This occasionally stimulates healing.

Progression: Retracted eardrums typically worsen over time, which can eventually lead to hearing loss, bone loss and the need to to reconstruct the eardrum and bones. It is much better to address it early by visiting an ENT surgeon, who can treat the underlying cause and prevent progression, with medications or simple in-office procedures, if needed.

Yes: Loud noise - whether just one episode or sustained - can definitely damage the inner ear and is one of the single most prevalent causes of non-age-related or congenital hearing loss. Hearing protection and precautions are extremely important - even with everyday devices like headphones. If you area concerned about hearing loss, please see an audiologist and/or and ent.
