Call the JW: In our hospital we have a good relationship with jehovah's witnesses.  They have specially trained people that will advise you about blood transfusion and the ways that you can sometimes get around having to have a blood transfusion.  These specialists will work with your doctor or hospital so that you and they are informed.  I would rely on your specialists in your faith.

Let's talk: This is the 21st century. There are many different causes of anemia. For some, taking iron will make you sicker. If your periods are heavy, you should probably be supplementing with iron, but if you're already anemic, there may be another cause. Despite your one-sample impression, transfusion (still a last resort) is quite safe if you truly need it to be able to function. Wishing you health.

Depends on lifestyle: The risk of aquiring an infection depends on the donor's health condition, and what behaviors he/she engaged in.  This is why people are screened before they donate blood.  They are checked for temperature, amount of iron, asked questions about general health, and have blood pressure taken.  The blood is even screened after donation for things like hiv.  Anyone with higher risk cannot donate.

You need a WORKUP: If you can go about your daily business, you don't need to be transfused, but I am VERY concerned that you have an unexplained anemia. Even at your age, it's a bleeding stomach ulcer or GI cancer until proved otherwise. Your physician needs to take a good history, including pregnancies / monthly loss. If you're a vegetarian and not supplementing, you'll need to start. Look for treatable disease.

Transfusion Reaction: A severe  transfusion reaction (such as hemolytic transfusion reaction) could potential cause death (especially if not caught early and treated appropriately).

Be a healthy adult.: You will be asked questions to be sure you are healthy, have not engaged in behaviors associated with viral illnesses like hepatitis or hiv, are not taking problematic medications and have not traveled to areas where malaria & other blood borne diseases are common.  You have to have normal blood pressure and pass a blood test to be sure you are not anemic.

Disease prevention: Some times, though rarely, infections may be transmitted through transfusion.  Blood banks defer people who may have been exposed to infections for a year before being eligible to donate.  The deferal includes getting tatoo.

Sensitized: She'll make antibodies against D (the main Rh antigen) and these will cross the placenta and damage Junior if he/she is Rh positive. Generally, we don't give Rh-pos blood to Rh-neg people because they tend to destroy the transfused cells anyway, and who needs that?

Hepatitis B,C.: This is  probably a lot less common than before due to vaccination for hepatitis b, and more diligent screening.  The transmission of hepatitis c via transfusion is currently at a rate of about 1 in 2 million units.  Hepatitis b is probably less than that.

Possible but...: Since all the donor blood and its products are screened for cmv, transmission of this virus through transfusion is very unlikely.
Cmv is ubiquitous, and about 3% of healthy newborns are reported to excrete this virus in their urine.
