Depends : initially every few days. Eventually hopefully once every two or possibly more weeks. Whatever you do make sure to get tested. If you take Coumadin (warfarin) without monitoring it can be very dangerous.

is a d-dimer  feu blood test better test than d-dimer ddu blood test for exclusion of dvt and/or pulmonary embolism? if no why?

Ddimer: If d-dimer is negative, it certainly rules out dvt. If d-dimer is positive, it does not alone confirm a clot. If positive d-dimer, you will need additional test including ultrasound

D-dimer: A d-dimer test is helpful with regards to diagnosing a pulmonary embolism (pe)or deep vein thrombosis (the pe being caused by a deep vein thrombosis or clot ).   The gold standard is still (for a clot) is a venous doppler study and for a pe - either a ventilation perfusion scan (vq scan) or a spiral ct of the lungs.  All of these tests require scheduling and may /may not be available in your area.

Possibly: Did your symptoms appear suddenly, or have they been developing over time? There are a number of causes for these symptoms - heart failure, venous insufficiency, thyroid conditions, arterial disease, blood clots - and you should see your doctor to be evaluated for all of these things.

DVT/PE: Elevated CRP and WBC are not the indicators of DVT and PE. They are elevated in infectious process.

Pulmonary embolus: When a clot blocks lung vessels and lung tissue dies, frequently blood is coughed up from the infarcted lung.

how can you get pulmonary embolism if you are on blood thinners?

Accepted Answer

Nothing's 100%: If you were put on anticoagulants for clots in your leg veins, a piece of clot could break off even on therapy and cause a pulmonary embolus. Having a pulmonary embolus while on anticoaugulation  therapy is one of the indications for placement of an inferior vena cava filter.

At least 6 months: or longer, ( and depending if there are any coagulation factors deficiency) sometimes forever.

PE: Generally we give antithrombotics for at least 6 weeks post pulmonary embolus but we tailor this to the patient and their circumstances so it could be lots longer but unlikely to be shorter.
