See your doctor: This is one of those things your doctor should know about.  You will likely need some blood work to check the pregnancy hormone level and your blood type and possibly an ultrasound although at 4 weeks an ultrasound may not be diagnostic.

Contact Ob: Please see your obstetrician at your earliest to assess the state of your pregnancy. Mild spotting in not uncommon in early pregnancy, but what you described suggests threatened abortion. I wish you the best!

mom had blood clot after knee surgery 5 yrs ago.meds helped and she now has no clots.i am now pregnant at 37 y/o am i at risk for blood clots now too because she developed one after surgery?i've read it runs in families but she never had it prior.

Genetic test: It is not likely that you are at more risk than other pregnant women. There are genetic tests for variants of factor II and V that can be ordered by your doctor. You should have a talk with your obstetrician to ascertain if testing is warranted.

Very controversial: Ethamsylate has been studied (and used) for abnormal bleeding such as heavy menses or to slow down active hemorrhage  during pregnancy.  There's no good evidence that it, or any other therapy for that matter, can prevent early miscarriage.  Depending on what's causing this bleeding, this drug may do more harm than good.  You, your wife and her doctor should proceed with great caution!

Clots ? : During pregnancy it is common to develop some legs swelling and sometimes develop varicose veins/spider veins . But to develop a clot either as deep vein thrombosis or superficial phlebitis then they need to be investigated with duplex ultrasound to start with and for DVT needs treatment with lovenox (enoxaparin). Pregnancy increases risk of DVT , if you have excessive swelling or pain then get checked by a dr.

Not normal please: Call your OB now if you are early that usually means you are having a misc., if later please call your OB asap, as that usually means a placental abruption or placenta previa both of which are emergencies.

Not normal : Bleeding in pregnancy is not normal and should be evaluated and watched. A low-lying placenta often moves towards the upper uterus as the pregnancy advances, to where there is a better blood supply. As it does, the edge or the placenta might separate and bleed. It it usually ok, but needs to be watched
