i have a small black spot under my big toenail on my right foot. it's only been there for about 2/3 weeks. i haven't banged it.

This could be a melanoma.: Although this is relatively unlikely, it is the only potentially serious diagnosis that would concern me. I would circle it with a sharpie, but not mark directly over it. Although the nail grows slowly, this may aid your physician in making an accurate diagnosis. A melanoma will not move with the nail. In any case, you should not ignore it.

Photo documentation.: A black/ blue spot under the nail in a 16 year old is probably nothing more than a bit of dried blood trapped under the nail. This could be the consequence of a minor bump of the toe of a pressure injury. Without actually seeing it, I guess it could be something else, but I doubt it. To remove all concern, you might  have a physician take a look at it.

Could still be blood: Or fungus based on your description. Melanoma is always a possibility as well. See a foot doc or dermatologist and have it looked I at.

Biopsy: The black spot could be many things, including a blood clot from localized trauma, such as a tight shoe, a fungal infection, or a serious skin condition affecting the nail bed. See your local podiatrist to have it evaluated.

i have a black dot under both my big toenail, it is on the same spot on both toes. i only discovered it a few months ago and its worrying me.

Probably a hematoma: Most likely a subungal hematoma do to micro trauma from an ill fit shoe. If it is the spot will move out as the nail grows out. It is highly unlikey that it is a melanoma since it appearing on the same toe on different feet.

See a podiatrist or ortho foot specialist. A dermatologist also can be consulted

Trauma: A dark line that runs vertically down the nail can indicate that you might have traumatized the nail matrix(the area where the nail starts growing). Other possibilities are fungus, melanoma and genetics. See your doc for a full evaluation.

Nail discoloration: Dark lines across the nails most commonly are from either trauma or fungus.  As long as it is healing he should be fine... if you are concerned, a picture or video upload will help and an exam will definitely give you the correct diagnosis and treatment if needed.

Microtrauma: It sounds like your toenails are hitting the end of your shoe.  This usually happens if the toe box is either too small (toe is pressed up against the end) or too large (foot is sliding around and the toe is hitting the end).  This is very common in runners--it can lead to either thickening of the nail, or it may eventually turn black and fall off--a new nail will grow in within a year.

See below: May be from direct trauma to nail causing bleeding under the nail. If toenails are too long &/or footwear is too short, nail trauma can occur. If u have vascular disease (pad) or diabetes, blood supply to nails may be compromised. See fp or podiatrist for evaluation & treatment options. Make sure nails are trimmed properly & shoes fit properly.
