You can lessen it by brushing the tongue as well as your teeth with your toothbrush.

See below: Black hairy tongue (in latin, lingua villosa nigra) is usually caused by some sort of rubbing sown of the papilla of the tongue so when they grow back they are longer and look "hairy."  th tissue then can get stained by a number of chemical s or drugs like pepto-bismol and look black.  Is is also a side effect of bulemia but by itself, it is harmless.

Colored tongue: Impossible to answer without complete history. Discoloration of the tongue can be from many causes-often the color of a liquid or food. It is often caused by yeast also. When some one is on antibiotics the oral flora changes - bacteria is less, yeast increase; bacteria can also cause color changes. Some diseases, variants may cause changes. : It is very unusual to have melanoma on the tongue however the best thing is to have a doctor evaluate and probably biopsy it to tell you what it is since different things like some bacteria overgrowth on the tongue could do that and you are right it is associated with smoking in some people. There other things like Puetz Jeghers Syndrome especially if it has been in your family.
