Pigmentation: It is quite common to see pigment deposit around the vulvo-vaginal area and that can be from minimal to a much larger area. Close follow up and occasional biopsy might be needed in certain cases. Follow up with your Gyn.

Yes: Eventhough malignant melanoma is rare on the vulva, a dark skin lesion that grows or changes needs to be evaluated. You may need to get a biopsy done.

Do you mean vagina?: The vagina is basically skin in a different location. So anything you can get on your skin, you can get there also. It could be a bruise, a mole, or a skin cancer. If it is new, you should see a doctor to get it checked out. If you have had it for years, just check it once in a while and make sure it isn't getting bigger or look different.

Doctor can evaluate: Because it is difficult for a woman to look inside her own vagina, a woman who thinks there is a new change on the surface of her vagina should have an exam by a primary care or ob-gyn doctor. If the spot looks non-cancerous, the doctor may choose to watch it over time. It the spot looks suspicious, the ob-gyn doctor can biopsy it to see what it looks like under a microscope.

Sure but: It is certainly possible to have a mole or birth mark on the vagina. If it is new, has changed in size or color though it should be looked at by your doctor to make sure that is all it is.

Don't worry.: Hi Emalou,

Folliculitis is very common where there are large sweat glands and course hair like under the arms and in the groin area.  Bacteria get down in the follicles and begin to grow forming small abscesses.  They often are noticed in various stages of healing.  I believe that this is what you are seeing.  Continue to treat the infection with topical antibiotics or antibiotics by  mouth.

Capillary leak.: Leave it alone. It is probably blood trapped beneath the skin. Some times small capillary vessels can leak a bit of blood. Days later, the blood turns a dark color. Use your camera function to take a photo for documentation. Compare the photo to the toe in a few weeks. If it enlarges, then mention it to your doctor. In all likelihood everything will be fine.

Listen to hubby...: It is probably normal pigmentation; however, there are rare cases of melanoma in this area.  Its reasonable to have it checked.  Best wishes!
