Yes -be careful: Antibiotics can affect birth control pills by a somewhat convoluted mechanism. (If you really need to know, it has to do with the enterohepatic cycling of the birth control pills and the 'good bacteria' living in your gut that can be killed off by antibiotics). At times like this, it is best to rely on barrier protection methods/abstain since the 'Pill' may not be 99.9% effective as it usually is.

: Antibiotics do not make women ovulate. In theory they may reduce the effectiveness of low-dose pills, but this is exceedingly rare. There is no chance of conception in this situation; don't worry about it.

will my birth control still be effective during the course of treatment, or do i need to use a back up method during & after treatment?

Not likely: I don’t know that this has been formally studied.  Known side effects are mild dehydration &amp; low potassium. effects on birth control  are not reported but it is definitely NOT recommended to use it in pregnancy or nursing

: In theory, various antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraception. However, this occurs extremely rarely. There is little if any risk; I wouldn't worry about it.
