Ranitidine (Zantac): Ranitidine is safe to take with oral bcp's and magnesium supplements. This medication will slow or stop acid production in your stomach lining, and may treat "indigestion" or ulcer like pain.  If this does not work well, get your healthcare provider to refer you to a gastroenterologist.

i have pcos and hirutism - are there any other ways to manage the hormonal craziness than taking birth control? would otc supplements help at all?

OTC supplements: are a waste of money and potentially dangerous. Diet, exercise and weight loss will help. Talk w/your doctor about metformin, which can reduce the basic metabolic problem of insulin resistance and often restore normal menses and even fertility. BC only makes your periods regular, it doesn't treat any of the basic defects and, of course, keeps you infertile.

Antioxidants: One must be careful taking herbal supplements. While some may be helpful this industry is not well regulated. Before adding any supplements to your life it is important to see if there are any good studies validating their use. Recent studies have shown antioxidant supplements to be ineffective and perhaps increasing risk. They are not known to interfere with birth control

Nexplanon ?'s: Nexplanon contains a progestin, and works by prevention of implantation via the action of the progestin on the uterine lining.  Nexplanon is close in effectiveness to oral bcp's , and is not affected by herbal supplements.  Since periods are often far apart on Nexplanon, if other symptoms suggest pregnancy, obtain a serum HCG test to be certain.

on birth control patch for estrogen supplement. still have very low levels of estradiol (5.0), and estrone (11.8). patch was on for test. what could do this? did have normal periods for 6 yrs. could this be autoimmune? being treated for lupus too.

Couple of questions: Your primary problem of low estrogen could be related to an autoimmune issue. As to the low levels being  persistent after a patch is applied that can be related to the product. Some people absorb a cream better or different patches. Talk to your provider about your options.

Usually no problem: Natural supplements do not interfere with the action of bcps.  However natural supplements are unregulated and the contents of the bottles do not always match the label.  And purity is always an issue as there are no standards under federal regulations.  This is truly an area in which the buyer has to beware.

No: Collagen pills should not have a major effect on the birth control.  To be safe, it is a good practice to use condoms too, which help decrease the chance of std's as well.
