With periodic exams: Virtual health care is not "online shopping for prescription medications" and needs each patient to have an in-person doctor to do in-person exams periodically. For example, after an in-person exam has cleared a healthy woman for starting birth control pills, she may be able to get follow-up care online for the rest of that year. Psychiatric meds and certain other drugs are not given on HealthTap.

: Today's "low dose" oral bcps are unlikely at age 44 to contribute to anxiety symptoms, as without oral bcp's, ovarian hormone production with much wider fluctuations would at times of estrogen deficit, accentuate emotional effects.  Approaching pre-menopause , if no contraindications, oral bcp's can be taken for multiple packs w/o placebos, lessening estrogen variations.

Call prescriber: BCP's can cause emotional symptoms, in those circumstances a change is indicated, get in touch her her prescriber so they can work wiht her to optimize her birth control -maybe a different BCP or she may do better on another form , such as an implant, there are a number of options -stick with one prescriber if you can so her care is well organized

Not likely: The lowering of dose you describe is not significant. It is possible that the pills aggravate preexisting anxiety. It is unlikely to create anxiety from scratch. However, there are much lower doses than what you described. Ultra low-dose pills have 10 µg, while the NuvaRing (vaginal) is 35% lower than typical low dose 20 µg pills.  It is worth a try.

Oral contraceptives: May be helpful for treatment of pmdd. Ssri's (selective serontonin reuptake inhibiters) are another option. Take care.

Dr. or ER can check: Heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding may need medication to stop it, to avoid too much blood loss. One's primary care doctor can help. An exam is usually needed, but if a teen has no risk of sexually transmitted diseases, then an internal vaginal exam may not be necessary. Sometimes, one's doctor will refer to an Ob-Gyn doctor to evaluate for medication (pills) treatment.

No: Different pills have different doses of estrogen/progesterone. Your doctor may choose the type that best suits you and may also help with additional symptoms that you may be experiencinge.g. Acne excessive hair growth etc.
