can birth control pills shrink fibroids?

May treat symptoms: Many women have uterine fibroids--a benign smooth muscle tumor.  Most have no symptoms, but some women have heavy bleeding or pain.  Birth control pills can often treat both bleeding and pain associated with fibroids, and thus are helpful.  Fibroids generally do not cause fibroids to grow--and use of the pill may protect against the future development of fibroids.

Not really: Although fibroids are stimulated by estrogen, they usually don't tend to grow more on oral contraception.

Decrease bleeding: Depends on the size of the fibroid within the uterus, pills can help decrease the bleeding and maintain the fibroid size and sometimes shrink it. However, large fibroids may not respond to medications and may require other medications or surgical procedures.

since i had a fibroid and cyst removed, my cycles don't end until i take a birth control pill after stopping for 3 days, even when not on pill...why?

Fibroid: What you have described is entirely normal. It is probably unrelated to the fibroid and cyst.

been on low dose birth control after a u/s showed a ovarian cyst ruptured. this was in nov 2018. been having pain recently after years of no pain and on the pill. can low dose birth control prevent cysts & fibroids too? how fast do fibroids develop?

: Birth control pills may reduce the risk of ovarian cysts a little bit. Ovarian cysts are very common though. Birth control pills do not impact the formation of uterine fibroids.

No: And birth control does not reduce the size of fibroids, the only med to reduce fibroid size is depo-lupron or surgery.

May or may not: There is conflicting data regarding this approach. Some patients do well but some do not. It also depends on the size and number of fibroids.

Does not shrink : Birth control pills can be used to decrease bleeding and control the symptoms of uterine fibroids. They do not shrink the actual fibroid.

i am aware fennel mimics estrogen and can affect birth control and worsen fibroids. but, at what dose? and does soy and dandelion have an impact, and in what quantity/dose?

Accepted Answer

: You'd probably have to eat 10-20 whole fennel plants to have any such effect. Dandelion has no known effect.  Don't worry about it.

is it normal to have spotting between periods while on the birth control pill, i also suffer from fibroids?

Breakthrough bleed: Very common to have this with fibroids with and without use of the pill.  Also, low dose pills can result in this type of bleeding.
