Not likely it was bc: Tinea versicolor is a fungal infetion that can come and go.  It is not rare for it to relapse--and come back.  Birth control pills won't treat it, so it is likely to have been coincidental.

Yeast treatment: Pityriasis versicolor is caused by a yeast. Miconazole, ketoconazole and Clotrimazole can help get rid of the yeast. Discoloration may last months. Control the fungus. But try a soap/wash with 2% pyrithione zinc for 10 minutes daily before rinsing, then apply Lamisil (terbinafine) at spray or Miconazole to affected areas. Use oil free sunscreen. If better go into a maintenance plan. Or move to a cool climate.

See a dermatologist: First, it is always possible that the diagnosis is incorrect. However, some cases of pityriasis versicolor don't get better with topical meds. And some patients have a predisposition to get the condition and not clear it well.  Seeing a dermatologist will allow you to come to a solution.

Many choices: If you're not adverse to taking a safe medication... the physicians I've known who've had this very common skin problem take a big ketoconazole tablet and then go work out to build up a sweat. Doing this once a month usually keeps tinea versicolor under control. Topical ketoconazole, or a selenium sulfide shampoo, are among your many other options.
