That's a shame: You need to try and find either a board certified addiction psychiatrist or a board certified psychiatrist who is also board certified in addictionology (like me). I think that drugs of abuse most certainly makes bipolar d/o worse and those with bipolar d/o suffer from a greater risk of substance abuse and dependency. I treat both at the same time in my clinic. You should be able to find someone.

Not One Combination: There really isn't one "usual" combination. In my experience there are some indicators that can guide selecting medications based on the nature of your cycles (how do you go from energized to depressed, which direction is the switch faster, etcetera), but there is also quite a lot of variability in responses.

Complicated answer: Most commonly, symptoms don't manifest until late teens or early twenties.  Children who are diagnosed as bipolar can be very energetic, have less need for sleep, temper tantrums and aggression are out of range for the precipitant.  They can also be grandiose and inappropriately sexual for their age.  Often the first episode in a child is depression.  Caution i f there is a family hx of bp.

Good Question: The whole issue of bipolar disorder in children is controversial, mostly because what we call bipolar disorder in children tends to look different than with adults. Chidlren with bipolar disorder tend to be more irritable, and their moods tend to be more fluctuating or mixed. There are not usually the clear cycles of mania and depression that occur more with teens and adults.

Mental Illness: Be gentle but firm and keep yourself as healthy as possible no matter what the other person does.  Please look into the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI).  They outreach to family and friends.  Peace and good health.

Friends are best: See if you have any friends or family that recommend a mental health provider. Just be sure that the new provider you seek is within your insurance network. Other great sources are your pcp or your exiting mental health provider.

Bipolar illness: Unfortunately there are no "traditional" treatment modalities for bipoloar disorder that have been proven to be effective. If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the only two types of treatments that have been shown to be effective include medications and psychotherapy.

i have bipolar disorder. i am taking hydroxizine 50mg as needed. it is good, but i need a  more effective drug for anxiety?

Anxiety and Bipolar: I am wondering what mood stabilizer you're taking for your bipolar disorder, because none is listed in your medications.  I see you're taking wellbutrin, (bupropion) which in itself causes anxiety in some people and could expose you to the risk of hypomania or mania.  Please talk with your psychiatrist about this -- you may be leaving out some of your medications, or they may need to be re-evaluated.
