Research: Doctors in general ared "sold" on a medication unless there are controlled trials that show us a clear difference between a medication and a "placebo" or sugar pill.  Pharmaceutical company supply us with some of the research, but they also can answer questions on research about side effect rates and other things through their medical departments.

why would statin medications  contraindict with the lupus  medications ?

Statins and lupus: Some studies indicate statins would be beneficial in lupus as this autoimmune disease accelerates atherosclerosis or plaquing of the arteries.   However some animal studies have shown the oppisite effect.  There is a human clinical study going on right now to evaluate the side effects.   The contraindication has been that it increases muscle pain and weakness in lupus patients,  Hope this helps

you are mistaken: It's an unfortunate misconception to avoid statins because of their "danger." no other medication class has shown the magnitude of benefit as statins. Not taking them is like never driving your car because of the possibility of an accident. Serious side effects are exceptionally rare, around 1 in 100, 000.  Minor side effects are common (1 in 10) but are dose related - avoided with lower dose.

Please Clarify: I do not see what you are really asking here. Please read your question and clarify so we can understand what your concern would be. Many millions of people are recommended to be on statins. This is in no way an abnormal situation and it is probably best that your mother follow the advice of her physician.

Yes, uncommon but:: Weight gain is a reported, though uncommon side effect of lipitor (less than 1%).

Statin: has strong reliable effects on lowering heart attack and stroke. Diet..... especially a high fat diet... no. Drugs that just lower dietary contribution to blood cholesterol (cholestryramine) didn't work well on prevention.
Exercise under supervision, more helpful. Statins can cause fat to replace liver--needs imaging tests to monitor if other liver disease.

Cholesterol meds: Welchol comes in a powder form that can be mixed with water and taken before dinner (also comes in pills but have to take 6/day). There is Zetia (ezetimibe) as well. Red yeast rice up to 2400mg a day together with coq10 200mg/day may result in less muscle pains. Discuss these options with your doctor.

Unsure: You have risk factors for heart disease and stroke.  Your LDL is above 160.  Certainly dietary changes can make a difference in your cholesterol levels.  You could try limiting intake of fatty animal products and recheck the cholesterol in 3-6 months.  However, at a level that high I suspect you need a statin.

Some people have: found that CoQ10 reduces the side effects associated with Statin use. There are no peer reviewed scientifically validated studies to support this claim however I have had patient's in whom they do notice a reduction in symptoms and side effects with its use. It can't really do any harm so I don't restrict them from continuing it.

Yes: There are several that are available.  Welchol, Lovaza, and Niaspan (niacin) are among those by prescription
