Yes, stop smoking: Stop smoking either way - it could be somker's stomatitis (brushing your tongue & stop smoking to get it to go away) or candidiasis (thrush).  Thrush requires prescritpions meds from your dentist to clear up but you really need ot have the dentist look at it to check it out either way. Your dentist can help you quit as well.

Tongue issues: The back of the tongue has different size "bumps" that are normal. Inflammation of these papillae can occur from various problems. I would start with basic oral hygiene.  
Brushing the teeth and using  an alcohol free mouthwash at least twice a day.  Use a tongue scraper if there is build up on the tongue. If this doesn't improve things then an evaluation is important to find out what is going on.

May Be Taste Buds: There are some large taste buds on the back of the tongue.  If they look the same on both sides and there are no problems, i would recommend you watch them and bring them to the attention of your dentist or orthodontist at your next visit.  They are probably nothing to worry about.

Exam for Diagnosis: The big red bumps may be nothing more than normal taste buds, although that would not explain the pain and cannot be assumed without actually having a dentist or another health care provider actually taking a look.  If you have no other symptoms see your dentist.  If you have any other symptoms check with your physician.
