i have been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. but every day i feel worse and worse, i have fever all the time. so my last chest x-ray says: there are chronic, mild bibasilar assymetric interstitual fibrotic densities. i don't understand?

: The findings you describe on your X-ray are mild and don't explain your symptoms. You need to discuss this with a pulmonary specialist .

No and Yes: At this time the only curative intervention for pulmonary fibrosis is lung transplantation.  There are no medications that have been proven to cure the disease.  Some medicines may help (such as steroids, n-acetylcysteine and pirfenidone) slow the disease however.

Several: A high resolution ct scan of the thorax can give valuable information. Blood tests looking for underlying autoimmune diseases are usually done. Many times a lung biopsy may be required for accurate diagnosis.

Answered earlier: Early it causes desaturation with activity. Later it causes low oxygen tension in the blood, and later it causes co2 retention. So the symptoms will be air hunger and signs will be rapid breathing. At later stages there is cyanosis to nail beds, ear lobes and tip of the nose. Later as co2 accumulates there could be changes in mental status. If the o2 not corrected, it can cause heart attack.

Pulmonary fibrosis: Fibrotic patterns on ct scans commonly take one of 3 different courses. It can reverse with medications such as Prednisone (in disorders as nonspecific interstitial pneumonitis- nsip), it could not get better.   But not worsen( as with a toxic exposure),   or it could progressively worsen and most  definitely be fatal. An example of a process such as this is usual interstitial pneumonia (uip).

Scarring: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (ipf) is a progressive, unrelenting scarring of the lungs.  This results in low oxygen levels, respiratory failure and eventually death.

No: At this time there is no effective treatment. N-acetyl-cysteine is being studied as is perfenidone, but the results to date have been disappointing and largely ineffective.
