Optimize all else: If you can't optimize your sleep, at least give yourself the chance to adapt your sleep to a new time zone as possible.  But also, make sure your optimize your activity levels(doesn't mean you have to be in the gym), optimize your eating habits(avoid too much junk food/alcohol) and minimize stress.

Jet lag: Drinking a lot of water can help as dehydration actually makes it more difficult for the body temperature adjust to the new time zone. avoidance of caffeine and alcohol on the trip will help prevent dehydration. caffeine can be used to promote daytime alertness when dealing with the decreased alertness after arrival. exposure to the local sun light will tend to resynchronize the circadian rhythm.

Plan accordingly: There is a difference between eastward and westward travel.

It is generally easier to accommodate to travel west... We just adjust our schedules accordingly.

Travel east is usually more difficult... Travel across 2 or more time zones usually requires about a day/time zone to adjust.

Exposure to bright sunlight is the best method for adjusting to jet-lag.

Melatonin: Ambien (zolpidem) has been studied and found to have some benefit for jet lag, however i generally recommend melatonin taken 30 minutes before the intended bedtime; it is better tolerated and a more natural way to adjust to a new time zone.

Hydration: And low doses melatonin ( as low as 0.5 mg) are known to help with jet lag. Alcohol and caffeine have to be reduced as they may worsen jet lag.

Various factors: It depends on your direction of flight, and how many time zones you will cross.  If only 1-2 time zones, you will probably be okay, but if 3 or more going east, you will need equilibration.  You can help yourself by drinking water, moving around on the plane, staying away from alcohol & caffeine, and adapt to new time zone by being in sunshine.  Can use melatonin .3 to 3 mg when you want to sleep.

Light exposure: The most effective way is to control your exposure to light and dark. The jet lag calculator on the british airways website is a pretty good resource (google jet lag calculator). If you want to get really fancy you can add carefully timed doses of melatonin... But the timing and the quality of the melatonin dose matters a lot.
