In some cases: If the impairment is due to excessive anxiety, then benzodiazepines can be helpful in improving rational thinking and more fully using your intrinsic intelligence. These meds however do not increase intelligence, and in many cases, will impair it. The right med for the right issue is clearly the standard physicians and patients must strive to uphold.

Memory loss: Impairement of cognition has many causes, from simple normal forgetfulness all the way up to depression, degenerative brain disease and Alzheimer's  if significant and persistent see a neurologist.

Addiction: Benzos are schedule II drugs because of their high rate of becoming habit forming and addictive.

: Should is not equal must or have to. There are conditions which required to be treated with clonazepam in the long term.

: Benzodiazepines cause sedation, dizziness, and mild cognitive clouding.  They may control symptoms, but tolerance is common, and cure absent.  CBD is arguably more effective than MJ, but expensive.  Cognitive-behavioural therapy and/or biofeedback offers the best long-term success, and would be the first choice in my opinion.

: Believe your question needs to be best answered by the physician who wishes to prescribe a benzodiazepine.  Do be proactive, and assertive, and do not accept evasive answers.  Most doctors would be happy to explain decision rationales.

Not benzo's.: Hello - long term use of benzodiazapines can lead to tolerance. Marijuana can cause marked  psychiatric problems in some people including anxiety, psychosis & paranoia. Paxil can be used long -term but most of my patients have experienced more side effects with it then from Lexapro & zoloft.  I see you are on Lexapro -it has an excellent side effect profile. Buspar (buspirone) is very safe for long-term use.
