Lump in neck: at any age a lump any  where needs to be evaluated!
have it examined and check for infection or neoplasia
if needed they may want to biopsy it

Yes: It is possible.  An examination and review of the history of the lesion will go a long way toward determining if a biopsy is indicated.

In Mets: The thyroid gland is a midline neck structure sitting on the larynx or Adams Apple.  When on swallows the thyroid gland moves up so that any pathology noted is known to become elevated higher in the midline neck.  If the mass you are palpating in the side of the neck region does not move as noted, think of  metastatic nodal pathology which must be evaluated.  Neck scan and bx necessary.

Total thyroid: The lesion that you had removed 5yrs ago probable adenoma for which a new lesion developed in remaining gland.  Bilat recur nerve dissection, attempt to save remaining parathyroids and completion of thyroidectomy needed following which RAI used.  At your age high cure rate with total gland removal.

Not usually.: By definition a benign tumor is not aggressive,  slow growing, will not spread to other sites, but could cause harm to surrounding tissues.  So a benign brain tumor or heart tumor could eventually become life threatening if it was ignored, but that would be a very unusual turn of events.

Yes: Benign tumors, especially in the brain , can kill  you as they can grow and damage adjacent brain or cause increased  pressure on the brain.  Benign lung or GI tumors can cause obstructive pneumonia or bowel obstruction with dire consequences.  Benign tumors in virtually any organ can cause irreparable damage if growth is unchecked or the tumors are not removed. Expert consultation is important.

Yes: Any existing tissue in the body will have some source of nourishment (blood supply) or it would disappear.

Chondroma: For themost part chondromas are benign.  However the position of the lesion which usually results from excess stimulation of growth hormone is important.  The more peripheral the lesion is in terms of centricity, the chance is that the tumor will not have an aggressive behavior.  If the lesion occurs around the pelvic girdle rather than distal extremity, it can behave aggressively.

how should you address an odontoma (benign tumor)?

Depends on location: A definitive diagnosis of an odontoma can only be established after removal, but x-rays can give a good indication.
Often,  an odontoma is preventing eruption of teeth and it that case it should be removed as soon as possible. Often it is removed just to make sure it is benign.
If there are no symptoms and periodic x-rays are unchanged for multiple years it is reasonable to continue observation.

were benign tumors possibly malignant at one time?

Accepted Answer

Possible, not likely: Benign tumors can turn malignant but malignant tumors would rarely, if ever, (i never say never!) become benign except as a result of total tumor destruction by chemotherapy or radiation therapy.  Although all tumor is killed, there can be a residual smaller mass because of scar and other tissue.  Such a "benign" tumor could sit stable for years and then regrow from residual "dormant" tumor cells.
