3-6 months: Recovery time depends on a variety of factors including the presence of other injuries (e.g. Nerve injury, rotator cuff tear), whether the procedure is arthroscopic or open, how quickly one regains strength and motion, and the demands of the activity to which one is returning. Only your surgeon can provide a specific answer to this question.

how is a labrum tear repaired?

Suture anchors: Your surgeon places small (usually about 3 mm) plastic or metal screws into the adjacent bone.  These anchors have sutures threaded into them, which are then passed through the labrum, and tied to secure the labrum to the bone. This is done in similar ways for both the labrum in the shoulder and the labrum in the hip.

Instability & pain: Posterior shoulder instability often results from a tear of the posterior labrum. The posterior shoulder capsule attaches via the labrum to the glenoid (inner shoulder joint bone). Posterior instability often causes posterior shoulder pain and a sensation that the shoulder is slipping out the back, especially when a posteriorly directed load is placed along the long axis of a forward elevated arm.

No: The labrum is a structure that helps stabilize your shoulder joint as it attaches to the capsule and socket.  Once torn, the fluid in your joint acts to prevent it from sticking back and the consensus is that they  don't heal.  The reasons to fix them are if it is associated w instability or if you have pain w/ +/- catching or mechanical symptoms.  The tissue has poor blood supply.

6 months: Younger athletes have a greater likelyhood of redislocating.  While physical therapy (rather than surgical intervention) helps some, the larger the tear and the younger the athlete the greater probrbability of future problems if not surgically repaired.

Ask your MD/trainer: Depending upon the stability and strength of the repair gained at the time of surgery, you would likely be in a sling for several weeks, followed by a progressive rehabilitation program. Over the initial 2-3 months you would progress from passive to active assisted and then active motion. Once full active motion and reasonable strength is regained, a progressive throwing program would be allowed.

6-9 months is common: We often tell patients undergoing more significant labral repair surgery in the shoulder that an extended period of time may be required to reach full functional strength. The rehabilitation process is necessarily a bit slower than would be the process forand isolated anterior repair.
