Banana Allergy: The spectrum of symptoms associated with food allergies can vary, but may range from oral itching and lip, tongue or throat swelling to abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, hives, wheezing, shortness of breath, dizziness and syncope (fainting).  Banana allergy is sometimes seen as a cross-reaction in individuals sensitive to ragweed pollen, also reacting to latex, melons, and kiwi.

After the obtain a history and perform a physical exam they may suggest skin testing with a commercial reagent and / or they may use a fresh piece of banana. Alternatively they may order a blood test. If there is a degree of suspicious for banana allergy and the testing does not help a food challenge may be done.

They are many: There is a long list of foods that cross-react with latex.  This means that because of your latex allergy, you may also have reactions to other fruits an d vegetables.  Banana is the most common. Also kiwi, pineapple usually it involves itchy tongue, mouth or throat when eating these this is called oral allergy syndrome. Not usually: Usually the plantain allergy discussed here in the states is to the pollen of the weed English Plantain, not food allergy to plantains (similar to bananas). An interesting fact about English Plantain is that, unlike typical weeds like ragweed that produce pollen in the fall, English Plantain produces pollen both fall AND spring, in a bimodal fashion. It usually contains multiple vitamins thiamine, folic acid, and magnesium sulfate in normal saline. I suppose an allergy would mean that one has an allergic reaction to one of the components in the intravenous solution.

No: Banana can be given after 6 months of age and egg can be given at 9 months of age. There are no scientific studies that delaying either of these any longer leads to less allergies.
