Yes: Epilepsy is a clinical condition of risk for seizures.  It is common and usually easy to manage.  There is no reason to fear the diagnosis.  You need to appreciate the special skills that neurologists need to properly manage patients with epilepsy.  We expect our patients to lead normal lives.

Usually a chronic : Usually epilepsy is a chronic disease. Number of attacks can range from very rare in many per day or per minute.

Accepted Answer

Yes but carefully: Women with epilepsy can have healthy babies but the epilepsy should be well controlled and certain drugs such as valproic acid must be avoided.  I suggest seeing an epileptilogist (neurologist with specialty training in epilepsy) before becoming pregnant in order to optimize treatment.

Occasionally: In some childhood epilepsies, maturation often brings end of seizures by age 18-21, but many continue and require medication for control.  In some focal epilepsies, surgery of a known lesion can provide a cure.  In the vast majority of cases, medication may provide good control, but not a cure.  The vagal nerve stimulator is a helpful approach.

LGS: Lennox Gastaut Syndrome is pretty difficult to treat.  Patients can have dozens of seizures per day, and may only reduce this number by 50% with 4 medicines and vagal nerve stimulation.

The success of treatment varies from person to person.  The goal is no seizures, but very few seizures is pretty good sometimes too.

Yes: There are several very good ones that are very well tolerated. But the choice is very individualistic and depends on many things, including the type of epilepsy, other medical conditions you might have, etc... A neurologist or epileptologist (neurologist who specializes in epilepsy) can help make a proper choice.

Get help: You should see a neurologist if you haven't already.  You may need to have specific testing done.  And you may need to be on specific medicines.  There are certain safety precautions that you should follow, which your neurologist can explain in detail.

Many symptoms: Infants can present with eye deviation, lip smacking, bicycling motions, extremity twitching.....Older kids can present with school problems, staring episodes, or bite marks on inside of cheek from nightime seizures.

Fairly simple: By definition, epilepsy refers to repetitive episodes of "ALTERED CONSCIOUSNESS", so, you would either become unaware of your surroundings or actually fully lose consciousness.  If you seem to experience periodic "spells", this is not necessarily epilepsy, but get checked out.
