Sinus infection: The problem may be chronic sinusitis.  Saline irrigation with a neil med sinurinse bottle might do a better job of clearing any debris.  A good exam by an ent, including a nasal endoscopy would best examine for the origin of bad breath.  Sometimes your breath isn't as bad as you imagine, also.

Should get better: But it is common for cough and sputum production to increase after stopping smoking, because your lungs are now able to clean themselves out from the crud you have been putting down there. The coughing can feel like shortness of breath. Don"t start again because of this.  You will feel better and better after a few weeks, and the health effects will be the best thing you can do for yourself.

Smoking cold turkey: I have never taken care of anyone who smoked cold turkey. ;-) Eaten it yes.  But stoping smoking cigarettes all of a sudden can be very upsetting. Nicotine is VERY addictive. Glad you are feeling better and your risks of getting it dying from heart and lung problems is much improved already.   Keep up the good work!  As one who used to smoke Cigs I know how hard it is.
