i'm now taking cipro (ciprofloxacin) because bactrim didn't help my sinus infection. cipro (ciprofloxacin) helped me before when i had sinusitis so will it help me now?

See answer: Neither Bactrim or Cipro (ciprofloxacin) are recommended for Acute Bacterial Sinusitis.  Most cases get better without antibiotics. For cases requiring antibiotics Amoxicillin-Clavulelate is best. If allergic to penicillin Levafloxacin or Doxycycline often used.

2 things: If antibiotic is not particularly effective for you, talk to your Physician about possibly switching to a different antibiotic.  Also, sinusitis and upper molar infection often have overlapping symptoms.  Make an appointment with your Dentist to check your upper right molars.

i was prescribed bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for 10 days for a severe acute bacterial sinusitis. i've never taken it before. is it strong and will it help?

Sinus infection: Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is an antibiotic. If you have a sinus infection, it should help because it treats bacterial infections.  If it doesn't help, a culture of your infection can help to pinpoint the right antibiotic.  Besides antibiotics, a sinus infection can also be improved with saline nasal rinses, which I would highly encourage for you. Do them twice a day.  Good luck.

Yes, if: Yes, if maxillary sinusitis is causing tooth, mouth and jaw pain, and sinusitis is successfully treated, these pains will dissipate.

Be seen: You need to see your physician for an exam and definitive diagnosis.  It could be many things, including a viral infection.  That would account for the fact that Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) did not work, though that is not a particularly good antibiotic for URIs.

Make it easy: ...And just call your doctor. Stomach cramps are common with antibiotics.  Not sure about back pain, and muscle pain.  May not be related.

: For documented sinusitis caused by an infection a course of an appropriate antibiotic for 7-10 days is usually effective. Occasionally up to 3 weeks of treatment is needed. It's also important to keep sinus draining by steam inhalations and/or nasal decongestants if necessary.

Sinusitis Rx: Sinusitis is generally treated with oral antibiotics and decongestants.  Since sinusitis is often triggered by uncontrolled allergies, antihistamines may also help.  When using antihistamines during sinus or ear infections, adding guaifenesin +lots of water can help keep secretions thin to facilitate drainage.

Simple to complex: Many sinus infections will resolve on their own. Simply using saline nasal spray and a topical decongestant may be all that is needed. For prolonged symptoms >10 days, you may need a course of antibiotics. For symptoms > 2-3 weeks, you may need antibiotics and steroids. For recurrent infections or chronic infections (symptoms > 3 months), surgery may be indicated. Allergies should be addressed.
