about a week ago i had bad acid reflux. biting my throat.. started taking prevacid (lansoprazole) and now i have stomach pain and diarrhea. what is the cause?

Diarrhea: Prevacid (lansoprazole)  can cause diarrhea in a few patients, it would be a good idea to try and switch to another acid blocker, try Prilosec or tagamet/pepcid etc.

Prevacid (lansoprazole) side effect: Diarrhea is the most common side effect of Prevacid (lansoprazole).  Other potential side effects include: skin rash or itching, abdominal or stomach pain, increased or decreased appetite, joint pain, nausea, and vomiting.  Unlike some side effects of drugs, the diarrhea due to Prevacid (lansoprazole) does not tend to improve with time.  Most people need to take a different PPI. The other PPIs do not tend to cause diarrhea.

Reflux: It is most likely due to infant gastric esophageal reflux (GED). It is very common in infant due to the anatomy at this age. Make sure burp them after each feeding and keep upright position for another 15min after feeding. May elevate the head of the bed/crib 15-30 degree to prevent reflux.

Need more info: Do not know the age of the baby, what other symptoms may be present, whether she is feeding appropriately, sleeping too much, irritable, or other vital info.  Strongly suggest that you take her asap and be seen by a doctor to make certain nothing serious is going on, or at least call and speak with a pediatrician.

Never Normal: Bloody bowel movements are never a normal event.
The color of the blood sometimes gives you clues from where the blood comes from, the brighter the closer to the rectum and colon, the darker the higher in the g.I tract . It can be anything from a fissure in the anal opening due to hard stools, an infection, if your child has been in antibiotics, an allergy to milk, to bowel problems. Dr asap.

Spitting Mucus: Hello! Newborns may spit up mucus leftover from amniotic fluid up to 72 hrs after birth but tends to resolve sooner. If the saliva seems excessive, a doc visit is needed to check for issues of the esophagus. Feedings and spittin: Hard answer without knowing your infant's age.   But are you "burping" your baby after feedings.  Babies take in alot of air using bottles and nipples  - burping them will reduce the air bubble.   Sometimes spitting up is due to formula issues -  changing to a non cow's milk formula may help.   Gaviscon drops may also help.   If the spitting is getting worse - dicuss this with your doctor.

Intestinal bugs: There are intestinal sulphate-reducing bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide, and this is the likely source of the rotten-eggs taste you complain about. Some evidence suggests sulfer-rich diets (dairy, eggs, dried fruits, certain vegetables) increase growth of these organisms. Hope that helps.

what could cause clear mucus like discharge from a 5 year old boys butt, he has been having tummy issues with diarrhea and has been congested with what appears to be a rash on his face e around his nose and mouth?

: There is normally mucous in the GI tract so with inflammation, more mucous can be produced. You should have him seen by his pediatrician to diagnose all his symptoms. Best of luck to you!
