No "teaching" needed: A normal, healthy 10 week-old baby who is using his first 2 fingers to grasp his thumb in either hand should stop doing it as he develops more, and starts holding other things. At routine baby check-ups at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months, etc... Parents should talk with the doctor about any such baby behaviors. The doctor can refer to a specialist if the baby seems abnormal.

Check it out: This is an area the may be involved in nerve compression which could cause some of the symptoms.  See  your doc.

OA: I would suggest that depending your ocupation, if pain is elicit with grabbing such as stiffness one of the most common places of affection in osteoarthritis is the base of the thumb. Pain and stiffness are some of the symptoms and a simple x rays of the hand can make the diagnosis.

Talk to your doctor: When the forearm and hand don't develop quite right, there can be other effects nearby.  Talk to your doctor to see how much weakness there is and which specific muscles, from the shoulder to the fingers, are affected. Together then you can decide whether you need a referral to a neurologist.

Lunula: Sometimes the lunula is under the skin and not readily visable.  Absent lunula can sometimes be associated with a vitamin deficiency or medical condition. It doesn't mean you will have a short life.

Finger pain: If there has been no injury,sprain or overuse to explain your discomfort, there could be inflammation in the form of tendinitis causing pain. Treatment would be resting the hand, applying alternating cold and heat and taking an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or naproxen for several days. If no improvement, see a physician for evaluation.

i jammed my fingers so many times in basketball when i was younger that all of my fingers (excluding thumbs) are crooked. were they dislocated?

Not likely: if your fingers are really 'crooked' you could see your MD to ensure you don't have early autoimmune disease like RA.

NEXT see a hand specialist!  A study of the NERVES leading to your hands...(PARTICULARLY THE MEDIAN NERVE) may be indicated ("Carpal Tunnel syndrome")
