my 3 week old baby constantly suffers from hiccups daily. what causes them? and how can i prevent them?

Benign variation: Hiccups have been explained as a spontaneous nerve discharge triggering the breathing muscle to tighten in a cycle like a heart beat. Some have suggested the stomach of the newborn rubs the diaphram and triggers the pattern, and that with age the stomach moves away lessening the problem. The most active cases have them before birth. I know of no treatment with any value.

Yes: This is actually common.Those that do in the womb often continue off and on for the first few months after birth.It is quite harmless and bothers parents more than it does baby.

Accepted Answer

Hiccups: Hiccups can be caused by over feeding.  Your infant needs about 2 times his weight in ounces of formula per day to grow.   So for example,  a 10 pound infant needs 20 ounces per day.   You can try some symethicone drops 3-4 times a day too.  If it is persistent and lasts for long periods get your baby checked.

Yes: Newborns and young infants hiccup a lot.  Some babies start hiccuping before they're even born and moms will report having felt a rhythmic fetal movement towards the end of pregnancy.  Hiccups become less frequent as your baby ages and by a few months it will no longer be a common event.

Yes: Hiccuping is very normal during pregnancy.  It is just a fluttering of the baby's diaphragm.

Pretty much all: Not a rarity or abnormality. Just the baby doing it's thing. No worries.

Accepted Answer

No known association: Over three decades I have never seen any association between the two. I have had an infant with 5 wraps around the neck & no hiccups & hundreds with no wrap & hiccups. Just because the two may appear together on occasion does not mean the one issue was a signal of the other.

is it possible that my babies cord is wrapped around his neck he has the hiccups a lot in the womb 2 times a day at least.. very nervous?

Many do: A neck wrap is common and thought to result around 12 wks when there is more room to flip around.The hiccups are unrelated.I have had healthy infants with as many as 5 wraps and their presence is often noted by poor progress in labor and  abnormal changes during labor in the fetal heart rate on the monitor. This rarely causes any issues before the work of labor starts.C-section is often needed.

Yes that can happen: And hopefully the cnadian system will allow u to have another us 34-36 weeks that is an important one cause it gives an est fetal wt , checks the fluid and position of the baby , all of my obs always get one at that time.
