Unfortunately : Unfortunately there are no over the counter medications that treat cough and chest congestion in a 5 month old. For this reason it is important to bring the baby in for an evaluation of their symptoms. Prescription medications can be prescribed as deemed necessary. 
A few things you can do for babies this age is to put a humidifier or cool mist vaporizer where the baby sleeps, use pediatric salt drops (peds ocean spray) for nasal congestion, and tylenol (acetaminophen) as needed for fever, pain, and irritability (indicator of pain).

Back to pediatrician: A 6 month old is very fragile.  If nebulization is not effective in relieving the congestion would take him back to the pediatrician and have him reevaluated.  Hope he is better soon.

See your OB: I hope you had your flu vaccine ! you and your baby need to be checked when you are ill. It is typical that after checking the baby's heart rate, you are sent to the er for a medical condition such as yours. If you are infectious, it is not good for you to be near other pregnant patients until you have been evaluated.

Cough : We are in the middle of the RSV season. That is the most common cause of cough right now in children.  A 2 month with a severe cough needs to see the doctor to check for this and other infections.   Your baby is too young to let this infection run its course.    Testing oxygen levels and listening to the lungs for infection is essential.   Let's go soon!

See below: You probably have viral bronchitis or influenza.  Viral bronchitis will gradually get better but the dry cough may persist for several weeks.  Influenza is more severe and is associated with fevers and prostration.  If you feel ok and don't have significant fever take over the counter robitussindm.  If you have fever and feel poorly get checked out by your md for bacterial infection or pneumonia.

Pleurisy?: Pain on the right side of chest without cough could be from different causes varying from pulled muscles to pleural pain from an infection. Chest congestion without cough is rather unusual, though. If the pain continues you may see your doctor for assessment of the cause of chest pain and appropriate treatment.

ACUTE BRONCHITIS: Your symptoms are consistent with acute bronchitis . You need to be reevaluated  labs and CXR done to rule out pneumonia. You will probably need a different course of antibiotics and a nebulizer to give deeper penetration for medication Please get evaluated promptly! If wheezing progressive a course of steroids may be tried

Allergies: Most likely related to either seasonal or perennial allergies. Also could be caused by a deviated septum.
Xrays would be helpful.
