i need help please i think i'm allergic to avocado, what to do?

History: Food allergy is diagnosed from the history and exam and supported by skin testing and / or blood test for the allergen in question. If one is found to be allergic to a food, one would be counseled in avoidnace and given a food allergy action plan.

Doubt it.: Craving has nothing to do with it.  In fact, I have patients who totally disliked certain foods (without suspecting any allergic reaction) which turned out to be allergens for them.

Sorbitol: People who have sorbitol malabsorption may develop diarrhea ; upset stomach if they eat avocados.

is there anyway to lower an allergic reaction to avocado?

Accepted Answer

No: Sometimes cooking will change the nature of the protein in a plant food that someone might be allergic to but avocado is eaten raw so that this does not apply. At this time there is no fda approved treatment for food allergy other than avoidance.

6 months baby. just started solids. what kind of vegetables are recommended to start with? and can i feed her fruits like avocado? what about juice?

Accepted Answer

Adding solid foods: You can mash or puree most vegetables for you baby.  Banana and avocado are easy foods for baby. Introduce a new food every few days. Remember it can take 15 times before a baby "likes" a food.  A serving size at this age is less than a tablespoon. Remember this is a messy time, babies love to feel their food. Juice is not critical for babies, avoid giving more than 4-6 oz of juice a day.

my baby is 10 months and doing avocado like green poop continuously for about 2 months now. they are very sticky and smelly. she eats very little too.

Green poop normal: Green poop could be from the iron which is in the cereal and formulaher appetite may be slowing down right now because of teething.

Prob low risk: Mold will not cause food poisoning in an otherwise healthy baby, but spoiled foods do pose a risk for bacterial food poisoning. If the baby appears ill, has blood in stool, a fever, or intractable vomiting, see the pediatrician. Without those symptoms, observation is adequate. Importantly, check food for spoilage before serving- don't give "iffy" foods!

i ate a piece of avocado today, and my ears and throat were itchy shortly thereafter. i have eaten avocado in the past with no problem. could i suddenly be allergic?

Yes: Yes. You may have become sensitized from previous exposure.

Possibly: If your throat itches - don't recommend you tempt fate. Stop eating it. However, if you want to know for sure - see your allergist.  Take care.
